The Mediterranean Commission of UCLG is co-presided by Jean-Claude GAUDIN, Mayor of Marseille and by Michel VAUZELLE, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region.
Mayor of Marseille
“The Mediterranean Commission is the largest framework for direct political exchanges between local and regional elected officials in the Mediterranean. Central to these exchanges are the common challenges we are facing in the region, as well as our constant determination to obtain recognition of the important role of local administrations as authors, managers and drivers of development policies the closest to the citizens.”
Political Council
The Mediterranean Commission has a Political Council since 2013. It is composed of local and regional elected officials from the three shores of the Mediterranean (one elected official per country and per network or association active in the region).
Current fonctions of the Political Council:
- To articulate the political voice of Mediterranean local and regional authorities
- To contribute to define the political strategies of the Mediterranean Commission of UCLG
- To intensify the political dialogue with international institutions, as well as regional integration in the three continents concerned
Members of the Political Council are designated for a period of three years.
For the 2013-2015 period :
Mohamed BOUDRA, Mayor of Al Hoceima (Morocco) is the President of the Political Council.

The Political Council gathered on:
- April 2013: constitutive meeting et election of the presidence
- October 2013: adoption of the Charter in favour of democratic governance in the Mediterranean
- December 2014: adoption of a Declaration of the Political Council on the situation in the area
- November 2015: adoption of a 2nd Declaration of the Political Council and a Communiqué_en on terrorist attacks

Located in Marseille, its functioning is sponsored by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region and the City of Marseille, with the support of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
